I bet you think I’ll say that the advantage of playing a musical instrument such as a piano is that it increases your time and space or mathematical skills. Perhaps you feel that it will increase your concentration and memory and challenge your brain. This is all true, but these are not the basic benefits of playing the piano.
As a teacher and a performer, I will say that the benefit lies mainly in creating beauty. I know it sounds like that, but it’s true. Music allows us to express our emotions through sounds and rhythms in a way that no other language can. It allows us to express ourselves and see incredible beauty in this process. Whether you play Chopin’s Prelude, Gershwin’s melody or Stevie Wonder’s song, the music moves, enlightens and liberates the soul. And this is the best and only reason why we need it in our lives.
By studying and learning to play chords, we can only learn to play about each piece. And by understanding the chords of a song, we understand the harmonic structure. Then we can play our favorite songs and even play them in our own way. We create our own arrangements and this is very beneficial. We listen more, become discriminating and develop our inner and creative minds (and ears). So is playing the piano beneficial? Take a word for it and try it out. You are never too old.
